I was lucky enough to test yet another gorgeous dress. The Katharine Dress from Sonia Estep Designs. It is a beautiful flowy dress with neckline variations, as well as sleeve and length variations. It can be made with a v-neck or scoop neckline as well as flutter sleeves or bishop sleeves. In addition, you can also select from knee length or maxi length. With so many available variations, this one pattern can create many different looks. I picked my favorite styles and made this beautiful jersey knit dress.
Fabric Selection
I went through my stash and hunted the rather large pile of knits that I have accumulated over the years. Two fabrics caught my eye. After much deliberation, I went with this beautiful ITY Jersey knit fabric from LaFinch Fabrics. I have purchased fabric from them a few times, and have been happy with every fabric I receive. They have a really nice selection of knits to make beautiful dresses. This fabric has a soft flowy feel to it and works well with this pattern.
The pattern is very easy to make. There are numerous variations to the dress. I went with the scoop neck bishop sleeve maxi length combination. There are just a few pattern pieces. In addition to fabric, you will need a tiny amount of interfacing for the neck facing. This was one of the first times I used my serger to construct 90% of the dress. I only used my straight stitch machine to connect the cuff to the bishop sleeve. In addition, I used my cover stitch machine to give me the professional hem all knits deserve.
Overall Review
Overall, I adore this jersey knit dress. The fit was impeccable. Absolutely no modifications were required. I can see many more Katarines in my closet in the near future. I am going to try a few of the other variations, and fill my closet with a few new maxi dresses.
