So excited!!! This is my first time testing a pattern, I am very excited to be working on the Iris Tank top. This is a cute tie front top from a brand new Indie pattern company, Hanger Handmade. The Iris tank top is made with a knit fabric and has a button up front. You can wear it with a button front or alternatively as a tie front top. This is such a cute design, I knew I had to find the perfect fabric.
Materials
I searched through my stash and nothing really suited the style. Off I went to a few local fabric stores to see what I could find. I picked up a blue knit fabric with gold metallic bees on it from my local Joann’s Fabrics.. If you would like this fabric, it can be found here. The fabric is really soft and a perfect shade of blue for the summer. I added six gold metallic buttons for the front closure. The buttons were a perfect match for the metallic bees.
Sewing the Pattern
I made the pattern on a size 12, which was what the pattern called for according to my bust measurements. The instructions are very clearly written and the diagrams are accurately drawn for even more assistance. Therefore, sewing the pattern was a breeze. I did find the pattern to be a bit big, and would scale down a size for the next make. In addition, I also added a knit interfacing to the placket to support the buttonholes on the knit fabric. I finished the hem with a cover stitch machine.
Overall Review
Overall, I love this pattern. How stylish is this top as it can be worn with the buttons all done, or undo a few and create the popular tie front trend with the bottom like I did in the picture below. It is easy to get on without even bothering with the buttons. I can see me making this top in a few other solids and maybe even experiment with making it out of a woven fabric like linen. Pair this top with jeans, or even a pair of linen pants.
