DIY High Low Dress Using McCall’s 7727
Well, here is the update to the sewing challenge I mentioned about a week ago. I joined a sewing challenge on Instagram that highlighted African American pattern designers. After looking at a few beautiful patterns, I finally decided on McCall’s 7727. I love shirt dresses, and I did not have a high low one in my closet, so this was the prefect opportunity to get one.
It took me a while to find fabric that I liked to work with this pattern. One, it takes six to seven yards of fabric depending on the view you select. The pattern shows both versions in a solid fabric, but I really wanted a print. Next issue was finding a pattern that would not be too much to pattern match, which would have increased the fabric yardage. Believe it or not, I found a really nice fit from Walmart. It is a beautiful black with metallic gold running up and down the fabric.
I made the pattern on the size 14. I opted for the shorter version, and since I am only 5’1″, was hoping I could get away with wearing the tunic version as a dress. The actual dress version of finished length was entirely too long for my short frame. The pattern was fairly easy to construct. I would recommend this pattern for an intermediate or above sewist, as they’re a quite of few pieces. Also, the collar detail and the hidden button holes are more of an intermediate skill level.
I am more than pleased with the final outcome. This dress is super cute, and the flow is amazing. The hidden buttons add a chic finish to the dress. The fabric sash allows a flattering fit on any body type. As you may already know, I really love shirt dresses, and have at least five patterns to sew, so I am not sure if I will make another one like this. If I do, I will try it in a solid color and add a bit more length for a longer dress.
I love it! I’m 5″3 with a slim body frame and I’m going to make one very soon.
Best of luck and I would love to see your make once you finish!
Thank you so much for posting your make of this pattern. I love your fabric and how it fits on you! I am also 5’1.
I almost threw in the towel on this pattern not liking the fit after sewing the front to the back. I think I just need to remove some volume. Thanks again!
Thank you! It is sometimes a bit challenging with my height. However, with the right fabric, I think it will be super cute on you. Also, the belt helped a lot!
