Black and White Abstract Dress: Vogue 9021
I made this cute black and white abstract dress with Vogue Pattern, 9021. It is a form-fitting dress with cute flutter sleeves. I really enjoyed making this dress. It was a quick and easy sew, and I find it extremely flattering. I used a cotton sateen with spandex fabric that has now been discontinued. However, you can achieve this look with any similar fabric with a mild amount of stretch.
Although the fabric is thin, I absolutely love the black and white abstract pattern. I saw a lot of reviews for this dress and was first planning on making it out of a red peach skin fabric. However, when I was searching for fabric online and saw this print, I knew this would work better for this dress. It gives the dress a bit more interest, and the added stretch in the fabric did not hurt either.
Modifications
I made a few modifications to the dress. I cut the pattern on the size 14. The sleeves, while ultra-cute, have a big opening which will allow your bra strap to show if you wear one. Closing the sleeves up gave the sleeves less of a fluttered look, but provided the coverage I was comfortable with. Also, the facing on the sleeves flopped around too much for me. Even after a good press, it still would not stay in place, so I used a fusible web to keep it down. I am thinking the weight of the fabric had something to do with this problem.
Another modification I made was closing up the split. I really preferred a pencil skirt to fit at the bottom. With the amount of stretch the fabric had, there was no need for a split. Overall, I love this black and white abstract dress. I feel so pretty when I wear it. I plan to make one more in a solid color with some stretch.
