I saw McCall’s 7774 and fell in love with view D. I am not sure if it is the color of the model dress. Lately, I have been in love with the color mustard. Anything I can get my hands on. I have some beautiful linen fabric from Joann’s, a few prints with mustard as the base color, and even scored a pair of mustard heels. I also love the simplicity of the dress. It’s a cute maxi dress in, and of course it has pockets! I just cannot resist a comfortable dress, so I decided to make it in a print first to see if it would jazz the pattern up a bit, and look more like a spring maxi dress.
I found a cotton lawn fabric from Fashion Fabrics Club, which can be found here. Honestly, I do not like a lot of floral prints. My preference would be abstract or even animal prints. However, the beautiful colors on the white background really stood out to me.
The one thing I did not like is how sheer the fabric is. That is the one thing I do not like when purchasing fabric online. Although the fabric may be beautiful online, it does not compare to touching and holding the fabric in your hand. I could have purchased a swatch, which I may do in the future if I decide to purchase more lawn fabric. To remedy the extreme sheerness of the fabric, I ended up using two layers of lining made with a white cotton batiste fabric. I would recommend using either a heavier cotton lawn or some linen, cotton, or linen blends.
The construction of the dress was very easy. There are very few pattern pieces which are a plus. The instructions are straight forward, and overall it took about two hours from start to finish. I did a simple 1/4″ doubled bottom hem, and it has an invisible zipper closure. U would recommend this pattern to any intermediate sewer, or an advanced beginner that is comfortable sewing invisible zippers.
With the fabric being so sheer, I will hand wash it and hang dry to preserve it. Overall, I love the dress and would like to make another one in a heavier fabric like a linen or linen blend. View B has also caught my eye and will be another cute summery dress.
