I finally had some time to get back to SewYourView challenges on Instagram. For November, the pattern was too cute to pass up. Simplicity 8982 had a variation of knit tops, skirts and a dress. I have plenty knits in my stash, so this was a win-win for me.
The pattern has two long sleeve tops with sleeve and neck variations. View A is a basic long sleeve knit top with a crew neck facing. View C has bishop sleeves with extra long cuffs. The skirt variations are just a short and a longer version of a knit pull up skirt. Then there is a dress version which appears to me to just be an extended version of the basic knit top. I selected View C and view E for my make.
Fabric and Supplies
I simply love the gold fabric that the model has on, and used a mustard yellow ponte knit for this project. I love mustard yellow right now, and have used this color in a few other makes. The knit is a medium weight and did not need any lining. The only other thing needed to finish this was some 1″ elastic for the waistband casing on the skirt.
As usual when sewing knits, I had to pull out my singer home sewing machine. Since my normal Juki industrial sewing machine only does a straight stitch. When sewing with ponte knits I use a basic zig zag stitch and change the width to 3. This provides enough space for the material to stretch without ripping the seams. I also use the walking foot attachment that came with the machine. I find this helps to keep knit fabrics even and prevent slipping and sliding while I am sewing.
This is a very fast sew. The entire set was completed within an hour. I did make a few adjustments. I shortened the sleeve an inch, as I felt they were entirely too long. In addition, I took the top in an inch on both sides to make it less baggy. This is definitely a pattern that I would recommend to a beginner. There are so many unique looks you can create with this pattern, from the dress to the skirt sets. Another plus is it is very comfortable to wear.
