I was fortunate to be selected to test yet another Indie pattern. If you know me, I have been trying as many indie patterns as I can. The Box Blazer is a pattern by Pattern Union. It is described as a retro inspired jacket that is dart less, loose fitting, and unlined. I knew this would be an easy jacket to make, so I was very happy when I was selected to test the pattern.
Fabric Recommendations
There was not many fabric recommendations for this pattern. I knew that it rarely gets cold her in New Orleans, so this would affect the weight of the fabric I wanted to use. After looking through my stash, I decided to use a black cotton canvas to make my blazer. The fabric is sturdy enough to support the unstructured design of the jacket. It can also be washed if needed. Also I was unsure of how the finished fit would fit my short frame, so I did not want to use a really expensive fabric like wool for my first make. In addition to the fabric, I used interfacing.
Construction
The box blazer does not have very many pieces which is always a plus. The instructions are very easy to follow. In addition, there is also a video that you can sew along with if you need further instruction. I love the inset pocket feature the best. It is a cute design, and a great place to store your cell phone or keys. I did not add the button holes, as I felt the it would not look as nice with the fabric I selected.
Overall Review
Overall, I enjoyed making this blazer. The finished fit on me without any alterations to the pattern was a bit big even for my recommended size. The sleeves hung a bit low off of my shoulders, and the finished length could be shortened a few inches. I highly recommend this for even a beginner sewist, as the construction is very simple.
